The Kingdom of the Black Pharaohs Tour
From the next season (2013-2014), the Italian Tourism Co. will include Old Dongola and the Nubian Villages in its classical tour. The new extension will last 3 days.
Old Dongola was nothing less than the capital of the Makuria Christian Kingdom from the 7th to the 14th century, a prosperous city that, thanks to its location, was able to control the river Nile. It was the site of an unending period of church building; a dozen in total. Towards the end of the 13th century, Makuria struggled to survive with no success in facing the Egyptian army. A Muslim king was placed on the throne, sealing the end of the Nubian Christian Monarchy.
All along the Nile starting from Old Dongola and heading north, the Nubian villages are the local jewels of this region. Between palm trees and sand dunes these colored villages reflect the joy of living of the inhabitants. The houses’ walls and doors are often painted with flowers and geometrical patterns, to remind one that even a desert can be a flowering garden!
